Rinat Myrzabekov (Reno) was a member of our school in around 97/98. He became a good friend and like a little brother to me. Originating from Kazakstan when he first came to train out of our gym he was already very accomplished at Tae Kwon-Do and Boxing. Below is a video of the final match in the light-weight division at the Global Taekwon-Do Federation’s (GTF) North American Championships. Here he went on to capture the gold medal. I have personally cross trained in a number of martial arts besides my extensive trained in Taekwon-Do. I have also taught for a number of years this open mindeness and diverse training. When Rinat came to our school he was introduced to his type of training and immediately picked up on grappling and started to heavily train on his new found ground game. This training along with the growing popularity of mixed martial arts (mma) opened opportunities for him to pursue his fighting career whereby he moved down to the United States to fight.

I have known GM Richard Parris for many years. He was an international competitor of many Taekwon0do tournaments and championships and an accomplished instructor for many years.
D.I.R.E.C.T Defense is an acronym first derived to name the fusion of martial art I was teaching. DIRECT Defense stands for Defense Initiated Realistic & Effect Combat Tactics Defense System. I developed this system as an accumulated result of my formal martial arts training, my extensive studies and my personal experience of over fifteen years on “the door” and personal security field. This is just a very small peek into some of our classes.

99% of personal protection is using ones brain! So many confrontations, attacks and fights could be and can be avoided or altered by using simple methods utilizing the brain instead of brawn! Probably the most important mental aspect of self protection is Awareness! Although it sounds simple for one to be aware so few people actually are. To explain awareness we may use Color Code model based on one first devised by the pistol shooting coach Jeff Cooper. The model is as follows:
Although the chart gives four Code levels awareness could be simplified even further into the fact that either; ‘one is aware on what is going on around themselves’ or ‘they are not!’. A sad factor working against awareness is apathy. “That would never happen to me!” or “Assault is illegal so I should be able to go where I want and not worry about being attacked!” Sure, these and similar ideas are great but far from realistic! One should never have to worry about violence or being assaulted but apathy to reality could get you hurt or killed! Sorry! it’s not a perfect world! Conflicts, confrontations, attacks, assaults and murders do happen. Be safe and be aware! There is no need to be paranoid, just be aware. Know that you are in control when you take action. If you are apathetic you are a victim! If you are aware you are in Control!
I saw this news story yesterday and it made me wonder if we really have free speech in Canada.
University of Calgary Pro-Life Students Face Biased Hearing on Abortion Display

Calgary, Canada (LifeNews.com) – The University of Calgary is going after pro-life students again for putting up a display featuring graphic pictures of abortion. The college charged members of the Campus Pro-Life group last year with criminally trespassing on their own campus to stop them from speaking out against abortion.
Those charges were later withdrawn. Now, after putting up a new display the university is threatening to expel a group of students who refused to move it.
The eight students received letters from the school earlier this month advising that they had violated the non-academic misconduct policy. Two students had a hearing now and the rest get hearings on Friday.
The university went ahead with a hearing on the matter on Wednesday giving the students no chance to present their side. Asia Strezynski and Ryan Wilson met individually with the university’s vice-provost and ombudsman, according to Global News, to establish the facts for a future hearing.
“They already knew what the facts were. We weren’t going to dispute those facts,” Wilson told the news service. “They were unwilling to even talk about whether these charges are legitimate.”
Strezynski told GN she asked acting associate vice-provost Meghan Houghton whether the campus security was doing their duty by asking the students to take down the pro-life display, but was told that she was not within her right to ask such a question.
“I find that troublesome because she’s the one who makes this decision; she should know whether that is a legitimate request and not make a decision based on what she’s been told and what impression she got of me,” Strezynski said.
University representative Grady Semmens would not comment on the hearing “because all misconduct hearings and issues are confidential.”
Houghton is expected to issue a decision within 10 days and that could take the form of a written warning, suspension or expulsion.
John Carpay, of the Canadian Constitution Foundation, is offering the students legal representation and said any discipline can be appealed to a five-person panel.
“It’s unfortunate they’re not even allowed at this stage to argue that censorship is not one of the duties of campus security,” he told Global News.
The group put up the display again on April 8, and was asked by campus security to turn the graphic images inward so no one could see them. The students snubbed that request and refused to leave campus, according to the university’s letter.
It made me think about free speech and self defense for the unborn child? Also leading me to investigate sites like this. (warning some content may be very graphic)
